Carlos Alcaraz has explained why his mother will not be making the trip to Wimbledon to see his title defence. The Spaniard gets play underway on Centre Court on Monday against Estonian Mark Lajal.

Alcaraz will have familiar faces in his box to cheer him on as his father and older brother, Alvaro, have traveled to SW19.

But his mum will be watching on from home because she is looking after his two younger siblings.

"One of the things about tennis is that you travel a lot and my dad and older brother come with me. My older brother is my hitting partner," Alcaraz said.

"But mum can't come because she is looking after the two little ones. So getting home is great because I miss them. The longer you are away, the more you realise how much you need them."

He added: "When I finish a tournament, it doesn't matter if I win or not, I just want to get home to be with my family. I live with my mum and dad, my older brother and two younger brothers. To them I am not a big tennis star, just a normal guy."

Alcaraz is one of the favourites to win the Wimbledon title and he is studying videos of Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to try and keep improving.

"I don't think about anything about other players. I'm still watching videos of Roger, of Andy, of Rafa. Novak, as well," he explained.

"I put in videos of myself last year - I'm not going to lie - just to see what I did or how I did it (smiling).

"Just moving, hitting shots, to do the same as I did last year. But I'm not trying to pick anything about other players."
