Luke Shaw offers verdict on Man Utd overhaul and reveals 'cheeky' Erik ten Hag message

Luke Shaw says there is a “big buzz” around Manchester United after Erik ten Hag signed his contract extension.

And the England defender clearly believes the new ownership model will bring the glory days back to Old Trafford. United and Ten Hag last week triggered a one-year option that ties the Dutchman to the club until the summer of 2026.

And Shaw, finally fit again and hoping for a starting spot in the Euro 2024 semi-final against Holland on Wednesday, was delighted with the news. He said: “Everyone is very pleased with him staying. I spoke to him a couple of times recently - it wasn't really a surprise, he was always going to sign.

“Everyone is very pleased. Look at the last two years, he's had a trophy in each season. He's had a bit of success and there is definitely more to come.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has also completed the recruitment of sporting director Dan Ashworth to complete the new executive set-up. And that structure has also met with Shaw’s approval.

He went on: “I definitely think (United) is in the right place now. I think with the boss signing a new contract and the new owners coming in to take their place, things are looking really positive.

“There’s a big buzz around the place. I can now see things getting much better than they have been.”

And Ten Hag, as well as checking on Shaw’s fitness, has also been winding up the left-back ahead of the showdown with the Dutch. Shaw smiled: “He sent me a little cheeky message about the game, it was funny. I won’t tell you what it was. Ask him!”

Shaw is also excited that Kobbie Mainoo is going to be at the centre of United’s new era. The 19-year-old enjoyed a meteoric rise into United's first team and has now broken into Gareth Southgate's plans to start England's last two knockout matches, with Shaw excited at what his team-mate has to offer.

He said: “The growth (of Mainoo) is scary. I see him as one of our main players, he's got the world at his feet. He just needs to stay level headed, keep working hard and the world is his oyster, he's got the world at his feet.

"He came out of nowhere but now, everyone knows his qualities. What he has done is really good - that’s a big platform and he just needs to keep that up.”

Shaw will hope to join Mainoo in the starting lineup for England's semi-final match with Netherlands on Wednesday evening. The 28-year-old featured for 42 minutes against Switzlerand, handing hope to many he could be in contention for his first start at Euro 2024.
