Colombo: In a significant development, India and Sri Lanka have established a comprehensive defence cooperation agreement during discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday.
Additionally, both nations agreed to collaborate on transforming Trincomalee into a prominent energy hub. Another key agreement was made to enhance New Delhi's multi-sectoral grant support for Sri Lanka's eastern region.
During the meeting, PM Modi and President Dissanayake also jointly inaugurated the Sampur solar power initiative via a virtual platform.
A series of agreements were finalized following the productive discussions between the two leaders.
These talks took place shortly after Modi's visit to Bangkok, where he participated in the BIMSTEC summit (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation).
Prior to the discussions, Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the historic Independence Square, a notable honor for a visiting foreign dignitary.
