PUNE: The flood situation in Pune has worsened due to a lack of coordination between the state irrigation department and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), according to Murlidhar Mohol, minister of state for civil aviation and Pune's MP.

On Friday, Mohol acknowledged that the issue arose when water was released from the Khadakwasla dam on Thursday. He stated that a detailed inquiry would be conducted to address the officials responsible for this lack of coordination.

"Over the years, we have witnessed a flood-like situation in Pune city only if more than 40,000 cusecs of water is released from the Khadakwasla dam. The water released from the dam on Thursday was definitely more than 40,000 cusecs. I have got information that the water release started with 25,000 cusecs on Wednesday night and was later increased to 40,000 cusecs. Early Thursday morning, it was further increased to 55,000 cusecs, causing water to enter the residential areas of the city," Mohol explained.

Mohol held the irrigation department and PMC officials responsible for the hardships faced by the common people after water entered residential areas on Thursday. He emphasized, "While more than 40,000 cusecs of water were being released from the dam, there should have been proper communication and coordination between the irrigation department and PMC so that people from low-lying areas could be shifted to safer locations. However, due to their lack of coordination, the situation turned worse. There will be a detailed inquiry of the concerned officials, and those found at fault will face punishment. Nobody will be spared."

Amidst the flood situation in Pune, Mohol left the ongoing parliamentary session midway and returned to Pune to review the situation. "I am the representative of Pune in the parliament, and when my city is facing a flood-like situation, I felt that it is my duty to be in the city. Therefore, I immediately returned to Pune to review the situation," Mohol said after visiting the flood-affected areas of the city on Friday.
