A former teacher, Jocelyn Sanroman , at a top performing Michigan Charter school is charged with third degree criminal sexual conduct after being accused of engaging in sexual relationship with a teen, as per Click on Detroit.
Who is Jocelyn Sanroman?
Jocelyn Sanroman, 26, used to teach at Oakside Prep Academy located in Waterford Township when she allegedly had sex with a 16-year-old boy. She had apparently informed about this to a fellow colleague who then reported it to law enforcement.
If found guilty of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, Sanroman could face a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
“This defendant is accused of using her position of authority to exploit a minor victim,” Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said. “These allegations represent the ultimate breach of trust placed in educators by parents and the community. As a former teacher myself, I applaud the teacher who contacted police about this situation, protecting other students from further exploitation," she added.
Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated that although a 16-year-old can legally consent, the dynamic changes when the relationship involves a teacher. "It's because we need to make school the safest place it can be for kids, right? Safe from gun violence, safe from assault, safe from sexual assault," McDonald said, as reported by FOX 2.
"We strive to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for the students entrusted to our care. Their safety and well-being remains our top priority,” said a statement from the school.
"These are troubling allegations that are unsettling to everyone in our school community. While privacy rights and the ongoing legal process limit the details I can share, what I can say is that school leadership acted immediately after learning about these allegations,” said a school spokesperson, as reported by FOX 2.
