NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday, where he reiterated India’s commitment to peace and said, “problems cannot be solved by war.”

In addressing the crises in Ukraine and West Asia, PM Modi expressed India’s readiness to support global peace efforts.

“The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia are a matter of concern for both of us. India has always believed that problems cannot be solved by war, and India is ready to make every possible contribution for the restoration of peace,” he said.

The meeting in New Delhi placed a strong emphasis on India-Germany cooperation across key areas, including defence and security. PM Modi noted growing partnership as a sign of “deep mutual trust,” adding, “The agreement on the exchange of classified information is a new step in this direction. The Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty concluded today will strengthen our joint efforts to deal with terrorism and separatist elements.”

Chancellor Scholz spoke about India’s role in promoting stability, particularly amid intensifying global conflicts. “Especially in times like these, it is of the utmost importance that India is an anchor of stability in South Asia. The international rules-based order has come under massive pressure as a consequence of Russia's attack on Ukraine,” Scholz said, voicing support for India’s peace efforts and “a lasting and just peace.”

Both leaders showed support for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, with Modi affirming a mutual stance on “freedom of navigation... under international laws.” Scholz stressed Germany’s commitment to upholding the rules-based international order, highlighting the Federal Armed Forces’ presence in the region.

Welcoming Chancellor Scholz and his delegation, PM Modi remarked on the significance of Germany’s Focus on India Strategy, which aims to modernise and expand the partnership between the two democracies.

“Under the leadership of Chancellor Scholz, our partnership has got a new momentum and direction,” Modi said, referencing new cooperation initiatives in technology, skills development, and innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and clean energy.

Chancellor Scholz acknowledged the impact of the Ukraine conflict on both Germany and India and commended India’s position as a stabilising influence. “Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine affects Germany and India in many ways. No one can cleanse his or her eyes to the conflict and the impact it has on us. Therefore, I approve that India supports a lasting and just peace,” he stated, also stressing the importance of de-escalating violence in the Middle East with efforts toward a ceasefire, hostages’ release, and a two-state solution.

Scholz reinforced Germany’s position on respecting maritime trade routes and international law across regions, remarking that “the freedom of maritime trades must be respected everywhere.”
