Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says only US can halt Israel's attack on Rafah, expected in days

NEW DELHI: In a special meeting of the World Economic Forum in Saudi Arabia's Riyadh, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas appealed to the United States to intervene and prevent Israel from launching an attack on the border city of Rafah in Gaza. Abbas emphasized that the United States is the only nation capable of deterring Israel from committing this act, which he anticipates will occur within the coming days.

Israel has been threatening to launch a full-scale assault on Rafah for weeks, claiming that its objective is to eliminate Hamas' remaining battalions in the area. Despite pleas from Western countries, including the United States, Israel has intensified its airstrikes on Rafah over the past week.

The city, which borders Egypt, is currently providing shelter to more than a million Palestinians who have fled Israel's seven-month-long assault on much of the rest of Gaza.

Abbas warned that even a "small strike" on Rafah would force the Palestinian population to flee the Gaza strip, potentially leading to "the biggest catastrophe in the Palestinian people's history." He reiterated his rejection of the displacement of Palestinians into Jordan and Egypt, expressing concern that once Israel completes its operations in Gaza, it will attempt to force the Palestinian population out of the West Bank and into Jordan.
