The USCIS has revealed the new citizenship test that the administration was planning to bring in to assess the applicants better. The 2025 test brings back the 2020 version which was replaced by the Joe Biden government with the 2008 version. The passing score remains the same -- 12 correct answers out of 20 but the applicants will have to study 128 questions instead of 100 questions.
Administrators of the test do not have to ask all 20 questions, but they can stop when the applicant answers 12 questions correctly or nine questions incorrectly.
“American citizenship is the most sacred citizenship in the world and should only be reserved for aliens who will fully embrace our values and principles as a nation,” USCIS spokesperson Matthew Tragesser said.
“By ensuring only those aliens who meet all eligibility requirements, including the ability to read, write, and speak English and understand US government and civics are able to naturalize, the American people can be assured that those joining us as fellow citizens are fully assimilated and will contribute to America’s greatness,” Tragesser said adding that this is one of the many changes.
What is the citizenship test?
It is an oral exam that an immigrant has to take after they file an application for naturalization. They have to clear the test in two chances. And if they fail twice, their application for citizenship will be denied. In 2024 fiscal year, more than 94% passed the citizenship test.
An alien can take the test in a language other than English only in a few circumstances, such as if the alien is 50 years of age or older and has been a lawful permanent resident of the US for at least 20 years.
