Jared Lane Wise, a former FBI agent previously charged with joining a mob attack on the US Capitol and cheering on rioters, is now working as an adviser to the Justice Department official overseeing its “weaponisation working group.”
The group is examining US President Donald Trump ’s claims of anti-conservative bias within the department.
According to an FBI agent’s affidavit, Wise was seen in resurfaced video footage repeatedly shouting “Kill 'em!” as he watched rioters assault police officers outside the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
The affidavit also states that Wise clapped his hands and raised his arms “in triumph” after entering the Capitol through the Senate wing door. He left the building about nine minutes later.
Police body camera footage showed Wise berating law enforcement and repeatedly shouting “Shame on you!” outside the Capitol.
"I'm former law enforcement," Wise told officers. "You're disgusting. You are the Nazi. You are the Gestapo. You can't see it.”
Wise was on trial in Washington when Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. Upon taking office, Trump issued sweeping pardons, commuted sentences, or ordered the dismissal of cases for nearly 1,600 people charged in the Capitol riot. Wise’s case was dismissed before the jury reached a verdict.
Wise is currently serving as a counsellor to Justice Department pardon attorney Ed Martin Jr , who also leads the “weaponisation working group,” according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment.
Martin was originally tapped by Trump to serve as interim US attorney for the district of Columbia. However, Trump withdrew the nomination after a key Republican senator declined to support Martin due to his public defence of Capitol riot defendants .
Martin, a prominent figure in the “Stop the Steal” movement, spoke at a Washington rally on the eve of the Capitol attack. He also represented three January 6 defendants and served on the board of the Patriot Freedom Project, a nonprofit that reportedly raised over $2.5 million to support riot defendants.
Attorney General Pam Bondi called for the creation of the “weaponisation” group in February 2025 to investigate claims by Trump and Republican allies that the Justice Department unfairly targeted conservatives under President Joe Biden’s administration. The group’s review includes the work of former special counsel Jack Smith, who had led two federal prosecutions of Trump that were later abandoned after Trump’s re-election.
After Fox News host Jeanine Pirro replaced Martin as the top federal prosecutor in Washington, Martin moved into his current Justice Department role overseeing the “weaponisation” effort.
Wise previously worked as a special agent and later supervisory special agent for the FBI from 2004 to 2017. He was arrested in Oregon in May 2023 on misdemeanor charges related to the Capitol riot.
