NEW DELHI: A Chinese student at a Boston university has been sentenced to nine months in prison for threatening and harassing a pro-democracy classmate , marking a significant conclusion to a case that has captured attention due to its implications for free speech and international student relations in the US.

As per a South China Morning Post , the student, identified only as a 23-year-old male from China, was accused of sending threatening messages and engaging in aggressive behavior toward his classmate, who was known for their pro-democracy activism. The case was brought to light after the victim, who remains unnamed, reported multiple instances of intimidation that escalated over time.

During the trial, it was revealed that the defendant had sent messages that included threats of violence and derogatory remarks about the victim’s stance on democracy. The harassment reached a peak when the victim was confronted physically, prompting them to seek help from university authorities and law enforcement, the SCMP report said.

In a statement to the court, the victim expressed the chilling effect the harassment had on their everyday life and activism. “I was constantly looking over my shoulder, unsure of what would happen next,” the victim said, describing the ordeal as a significant mental and emotional burden.

The defense argued that cultural differences and political tensions had influenced the defendant's actions, suggesting that the behavior was partly due to the charged political climate between the US and China. However, the judge dismissed these claims, emphasizing the seriousness of the threats and the impact on the victim.

“This case is not about politics or cultural misunderstandings. It’s about the right of every student to feel safe and supported in their educational environment, free from threats and harassment,” the judge said during the sentencing.

The university has not commented on the case, citing privacy concerns and the ongoing review of their policies regarding student conduct and safety. However, they reiterated their commitment to a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their political beliefs.

The sentence includes nine months of imprisonment followed by a period of supervised release. Additionally, the court has issued a restraining order, prohibiting any contact between the defendant and the victim.

This case has sparked discussions on college campuses across the country about the extent of free speech and the responsibilities of universities to protect their students from harassment, especially when international students are involved.
