Airline company Emirates on Wednesday clarified that the smoke observed on flight EK547 , from Chennai to Dubai, was due to a technical issue during refuelling. The incident occurred around 9.50pm on Tuesday, shortly before the flight's scheduled departure from Chennai International Airport.

On Tuesday, smoke was seen emanating from the wing area of the aircraft. A video of the incident also appeared to show smoke coming from the rear section of the plane. The flight EK547 eventually took off after safety checks.

"Emirates flight EK547 from Chennai to Dubai on 24 September 2024 was delayed due to a technical fault. Following an engineering inspection, the aircraft was cleared to proceed to Dubai," An Emirates spokesperson told news agency ANI. Emergency response teams were deployed promptly to extinguish the smoke, which was emanating from one of the aircraft’s engines.

Following a thorough engineering inspection, the aircraft was cleared to continue its journey. Although passengers had not yet boarded, approximately 320 individuals were in the terminal and lounge during the disruption. The airline reassured customers of its commitment to maintaining high safety standards and conducting all necessary checks before flight departures.
