NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Sudha Murty, a newly appointed Rajya Sabha MP, for her inaugural speech in the House on Tuesday, which focused on women's health . Murty shared a poignant quote from her father, emphasizing the impact of a mother's loss on a family.

"I want to thank Sudha Murty for speaking in detail about women's health," PM Modi said as the philanthropist-author stood up and greeted him.

The Prime Minister acknowledged Sudha Murty's "emotional" remarks on mothers and highlighted his government's dedication to prioritizing women's health and sanitation over the past decade. PM noted the positive impact of the government's initiatives, such as the construction of toilets, provision of sanitary pads, and the implementation of a vaccination program for pregnant women.

During her maiden speech in the Rajya Sabha, Sudha Murty advocated for a government-sponsored vaccination program to prevent cervical cancer in girls aged 9 to 14. "There is a vaccination which is given to girls, between the age of nine to 14, known as a cervical vaccination. If the girls take that, it (cancer) can be avoided ... we should promote vaccination for the benefit of our girls because prevention is better than cure," she said

"It worked very well. It is not expensive. Today it is Rs 1,400 for people like me who are in the field. If the government intervenes and negotiates...you can bring it to Rs 700-800. We have such a large population. It will be beneficial for our girls in the future," she said during her 13-minute address.

Murty, who was nominated to the upper house by President Droupadi Murmu on the eve of International Women's Day , expressed confidence in the government's ability to implement such a program, citing the successful handling of the large-scale Covid vaccination drive.
