Indian Railways has long been under scrutiny for the quality and safety of the food served on its trains. While complaints often revolve around subpar quality or contamination, a recent incident on the Vande Bharat Express has sparked outrage for a different reason.
The viral video shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) shows an elderly passenger involved in a physical altercation with a waiter after being mistakenly served a non-vegetarian meal on board the Vande Bharat Express journey (Howrah to Ranchi) on July 26.
Video
Shared by one Kunal Verma, one can see that an elderly passenger, who was reportedly a vegetarian, is seen arguing with a railway staff member before slapping him twice. The altercation was recorded by many passengers and quickly went viral, drawing widespread attention and commentary. Apparently, the passenger consumed the meal, only to realise afterwards that it was non-vegetarian. Enraged by the mistake, he confronted the waiter and slapped him. The waiter is seen apologising profusely in the video, but the situation escalated further when other passengers intervened.
In the video, one can clearly see that one passenger struck the elderly man on the back of his head, demanding he apologise to the waiter. One can hear the other passenger shouting, “Upar likha rehta hai (It is written on top)," pointing out the labels on the food packaging indicating whether the meal is vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
Reactions on social media were swift and varied. While some users expressed bewilderment at the incident, with one asking, “Why (do) people hate protein?” Others condemned the physical altercation. “You cannot take the law into your own hands. Just because he is poor and cannot put up a fight,” commented one user, criticising the elderly man's actions. Another user condemned both parties involved, stating, “The old man did wrong by slapping the waiter. The guy in the red t-shirt also did wrong by hitting the old man on the head and shoulder. Both should be punished.”
The incident also sparked a broader discussion about food mix-ups in public services. “This ‘by mistake' has become a pattern. There have been many such cases on domestic airlines, Zomato, and Swiggy. This needs to be independently investigated, and the guilty need to be punished,” a user suggested, highlighting the recurring issue of incorrect food deliveries in various sectors.

Known for its speed and comfort, this express train has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. It's not the first time that the Vande Bharat train has landed in controversy. In January this year, a passenger on Varanasi bound Vande Bharat Express complained of being provided stale food. On the other hand, in February, another passenger complained to the Indian Railways about finding a dead cockroach in his non-vegetarian meal. He was on the Vande Bharat Express heading to Jabalpur.

Vande Bharat by mistake served Non-Veg food to a old person. He didn't saw instructions and ate the food. Being vegetarian he realised it tastes like non-veg so he got furious & gave 2 tight slap to the waiter.
