NEW DELHI: A doctor at a private hospital in Gujarat's Bhavnagar was allegedly assaulted by three people after he requested them to remove their footwear before entering the emergency room , according to police reports on Sunday.
The incident, which occurred on September 12 at Shreya Hospital in Sihor town, resulted in the arrest of the accused on Saturday.
The altercation began when the accused—Hiren Dangar, Bhavdeep Dangar, and Kaushik Kuvadiya—arrived at the hospital seeking treatment for a woman with a head injury. Upon entering the emergency room, the doctor, identified as Dr Jaideepsinh Gohil (33), asked them to remove their footwear, a standard hospital protocol. However, the request sparked verbal abuse directed at the doctor and nursing staff, according to the First Information Report (FIR).
The situation quickly escalated, with the men allegedly physically assaulting Dr Gohil, leaving him with injuries. In addition to attacking the doctor, the trio reportedly damaged medical equipment and threatened his life, the FIR stated.
The police have arrested the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions for causing harm, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation.
This incident follows nationwide protests by doctors calling for better safety measures in healthcare facilities. The protests, which gained momentum after the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, have called for safer working environments for medical professionals, particularly in public health institutions.
