NEW DELHI: The scourge of mob violence has once again struck West Bengal , as a man was brutally beaten to death in Hooghly district on Monday, marking the fourth such tragic incident in the state within a week, according to police reports .

The victim , identified as Biswajit Manna from Naita Malpaharpur gram panchayat in Tarakeswar area, fell prey to the assailants known to his family. Two people have been arrested in connection with the crime, confirmed a senior officer from Hooghly Rural Police, who also mentioned that a suo moto case has been initiated.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Manna was lured out of his residence on Sunday night under false pretenses by the accused. The motive behind the attack appears to be related to a financial dispute, as Manna had allegedly borrowed Rs 50,000 from the perpetrators but failed to repay the debt.

"At his friend's place, the accused tied Manna and continued beating him until he lost consciousness. The victim's mother and daughter-in-law managed to rescue him and rushed him to the nearest hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries," police sources revealed.
