NEW DELHI: Congress on Thursday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ' parasite ' comment accusing it of "eating up regional parties ".

"Only a parasite can use that word. Look at the track record of how the regional parties have been eaten up by the BJP ", Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh told PTI.

PM Modi, during his speech in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, said, "If you analyse the just-concluded Lok Sabha results, you will see that where the Congress fought alone it could not win many seats. But in states where the grand old party piggybacked on other parties, it made considerable gains."

"This shows that Congress now eats away the votes of parties with which it associates like a parasite," he added.

Talking about how BJD supported the opposition party in staging a walkout on Wednesday, Ramesh said, "Today, the BJD has stood with the INDIA group in the Rajya Sabha. So if anybody is a parasite, it is the BJP."

BJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra orchestrated his party members' exit from the Rajya Sabha after pointing out the absence of any mention of Odisha's persistent demand for special category status in President Droupadi Murmu's address or PM Modi's response.

BJD and the saffron party formed an alliance in 1998 which continued till 2009.
