Rahul must learn about Congress's 'black deeds' from pocket-version of Constitution he flaunts: BJP

NEW DELHI: The BJP launched a fresh attack on the Congress on the eve of the budget session in Parliament, claiming that the pocket-version of the Constitution frequently displayed by Rahul Gandhi and other leaders highlights the opposition party's disrespect for the document.

BJP MP Anurag Thakur asserted that if Rahul Gandhi studies this copy, he will learn about the Congress's "black deeds", including the imposition of the Emergency and the violation of constitutional norms and guidelines.

Thakur mentioned that the preface of one edition, written by senior advocate and former attorney general KK Venugopal, describes how the Congress government threatened the judiciary.

Thakur also said that displaying copies of the Constitution and falsely taking oaths in its name will not change the fact that it is the Congress that disrespected it, while PM Modi has always shown his reverence for it. He alleged that the Congress changed the Constitution and mutilated its spirit in 1975 to perpetuate the Gandhi family rule and demanded that Rahul Gandhi apologize to the country.

BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya and spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also criticized Rahul Gandhi, suggesting that he hasn't even opened the copy of the Constitution he keeps flashing. Malviya quoted from the preface, written by Gopal Sankaranarayanan, which says, "Our Constitution was crafted by the finest, most emancipated minds of the time, and thankfully, not directed by the confused Nehruvian social policy that guided successive governments,” pointing out that this text seems to indicate that “Rahul Gandhi hasn't even opened the copy of the Constitution he keeps flashing”.

The BJP's loss of over 60 seats in the recent Lok Sabha polls was attributed to the Congress and its allies' campaign alleging that the Modi government wanted to change the Constitution. Since coming to power with the support of allies, the BJP-led NDA government has been highlighting the Congress's "disrespect" for the Constitution during its decades-long rule to counter their claim. The government recently announced the commemoration of June 25, when the Emergency was imposed in 1975, as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'.
