AMBALA: Haryana transport and women and child development minister Aseem Goel, who is MLA from Ambala City asked Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to pacify the farmers sitting on protest for over five months at Shambhu border on the National Highway (NH) 44 (GT Road).

Goel met Chouhan at Delhi on Tuesday, where he raised the farmers’ issue while asking the Union agriculture minister to work to pacify farmers to open the Shambhu border. NH 44 is considered the lifeline of the region as it connects the national capital New Delhi to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

Aseem Goel said, “The farmers halted traffic (on NH-44) after starting their Andolan about five-and-a-half months ago near Shambhu village situated on the border of Ambala district. The border has been closed since the start of the farmers’ agitation, which has caused inconvenience to the general public and especially businessmen of Ambala are facing difficulties in doing their business.”

“The Centre government should hold talks with the agitating farmers and pacify them to open the road through (Shambhu) border. While this will provide relief to the people living nearby, it will also ease the businessmen to carry out their work”, said Aseem Goel.

Goel said the Union agriculture minister assured him that the Centre government is serious about this issue and will take action soon.

Ambala City houses a large cloth market, where the businessmen and people from several neighbouring states especially Punjab, HP and J&K come to do business. Due to closure of NH-44, the longer alternative routes have added more transport cost and delays in timely delivery of the goods from the market, which is becoming a problem for the businessmen here.

Recently, a group of traders from Ambala had reached Shambhu border in their attempt to hold talks with the protesting farmers to ask them to open the border, while the farmers had alleged that they came there to attack and create a ruckus.

Farmer leader Sarvan Singh Pandher of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, one of the leaders spearheading the protest at Shambhu said, “It is good if Aseem Goel asked the Centre government for holding talks with the farmers, we are open for the same. But we wonder, how much value would Centre government leaders would give to Goel or Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, if they press for holding talks with farmers to resolve our issues. Even in the Parliament today, the Prime Minister did not say a single word about farmers, so we do not have much hope.”

About the Goel’s statement that the road is blocked by farmers, Pandher said, “The road is not blocked by farmers, but by the Haryana government by erecting concrete blocks and walls. In fact, the Haryana government committed atrocities on protesting farmers by using teargas shells, rubber bullets and one farmer was killed. If any Haryana minister would pass with their vehicle from our side, he will not be stopped as the road is open till Haryana blockades.”

Construct flyover at Sultanpur Chowk on Delhi-Ambala highway

Aseem Goel also held a meeting with Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari and urged him to develop a flyover and vehicle underpass at Sultanpur Chowk on Delhi-Ambala highway as it is an accident prone area. Goel said Gadkari has given approval to this development.
