BHUBANESWAR: Opposition BJD on Sunday announced a six-hour bandh in Bhubaneswar from 6 am on Tuesday, pressing for strict action against police personnel of Bharatpur police station accused of assaulting an Army officer and molesting his fiancée in custody on Sept 15.

Senior BJD member and former minister Debi Mishra accused the state govt of trying to suppress the issue and shield the police personnel, whose alleged misconduct has drawn sharp criticism from political parties, Army and civil society organisations across the country.

“Even though a week has passed since the shameful incident, the govt has sat quiet by only suspending five police personnel and registering a case against them. It seems the BJP govt is trying to hush up the issue. Those involved in the horrific incident should be arrested immediately,” Mishra told reporters.

A few days ago, BJD president and former CM Naveen Patnaik came down heavily on the govt and demanded a judicial probe into the alleged custodial violence.

Senior BJD member Arun Sahoo blamed some senior officers of the commissionerate police for issuing misleading statements to the media. He alleged the police are trying to tarnish the image of the woman by sharing her personal photos with the media.

BJP asked the BJD to refrain from exploiting the sensitive issue for political gain. BJP pointed out that crimes against women were on the rise during the previous govt.

“The state govt has taken the matter seriously. Prompt action was taken by suspending five police personnel and registering a case against them. The crime branch has been tasked to probe the case. CM Mohan Majhi himself has committed to a fair and proper investigation into the incident,” BJP spokesperson Dilip Mallick said.

Commerce and transport minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena said the culprits will be taken to task. Jena claimed the previous BJD govt had a history of covering up many serious crimes. “Our govt is not like the earlier Naveen Patnaik govt that went the extra mile to suppress heinous crimes in the past. Investigation into the murder of minister Naba Das was diluted, and the real culprits were protected. Law and order situation was the worst during the BJD regime,” Jena said.
