NEW DELHI: Indian Meteorological Department ( IMD ) reported on Monday that the country experienced 536 heatwave days this summer , the highest number in 14 years. The weather agency said that June alone saw 181 heatwave days, the most in the month in 15 years.

According the IMD, India is set to witness above normal railfall in July, adding that La Nina conditions, which are considered favourable for monsoon rainfall in India, are likey to prevail in August and September.

"Normal to above-normal rainfall is most likely over most parts of the country except many parts of northeast India and some parts of northwest, east, and southeast peninsular India," said IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

'Northwest India records warmest June since 1901'

Northwest India experienced its warmest June on record since 1901, with an average temperature of 31.73 degrees Celsius. The region's average maximum temperature reached 38.02 degrees Celsius, which is 1.96 degrees above normal. The average minimum temperature was 25.44 degrees Celsius, 1.35 degrees higher than usual.

"Northwest India recorded a mean temperature of 31.73 degrees Celsius in June, 1.65 degrees Celsius above normal and the highest since 1901," IMD chief said.

Northeast India faced a 33% rainfall deficit in June due to the slow progression of the monsoon over the northern and eastern parts of the country, with only one low-pressure area developing late in the month.

'India records below-normal rainfall in June'

India saw an 11% rainfall deficit in June, the highest in five years. The country received 147.2 mm of rainfall compared to the normal 165.3 mm for the month, marking the seventh lowest since 2001. Although the monsoon began early in Kerala and the northeastern region on May 30 and progressed normally up to Maharashtra, it lost momentum, delaying rains in several states and worsening the heatwave's impact in northwest India.

"The country recorded 16 days of below-normal rainfall activity from June 11 to June 27, leading to overall below-normal precipitation," the IMD chief said.
