'I had to beg for help': Manish Sisodia on financial struggles amid corruption case

NEW DELHI: Former Delhi deputy chief minister and AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Sunday said that there were efforts to turn him against former chief minister and party supremo Arvind Kejriwal after his arrest in a corruption case related to the alleged excise policy scam .

Sisodia addressed a Janta Adalat at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, organised by party head Kejriwal following his resignation as chief minister. This marks Kejriwal's first public appearance since stepping down from the position.

In comments shared on X, Sisodia indicated that opposition members attempted to suggest that Kejriwal had implicated him in the case. "When we did not do anything wrong, why would he take my name?" he questioned, underlining his loyalty to the party.

This statement came after Kejriwal's announcement that he would not return as chief minister until the people of Delhi declare him "honest." He has also called for early elections in the national capital, proposing November this year ahead of the scheduled February elections.

Sisodia drew a parallel to mythological figures, saying, "You are trying to separate Lakshman from Rama... No Ravana can ever separate Lakshman from Rama."

He also recounted personal struggles, revealing, "In 2002, when I was a journalist, I purchased a flat for Rs Rs lakh, but it was confiscated. I had Rs 10 lakh in my account, which was seized as well. I had to beg for help to pay my son's fees, explaining that the ED had frozen my bank account."

Sisodia expressed strong sentiments regarding the challenges faced by AAP, stating, "Our leaders were jailed to hinder the work of the people of Delhi and to destabilise our government and party. However, I take great pride in saying that neither our party has broken nor our government has fallen."

He disclosed that he had faced threats and temptations to leave AAP but remained steadfast. "We @ArvindKejriwal are soldiers of Ji and stand firmly with him," he declared, reaffirming his commitment to the party and its leadership amid ongoing challenges.

Kejriwal's announcement came after his release from Tihar Jail, where he had been held following bail granted by the Supreme Court in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.
