NEW DELHI: A day after jailed leader Amritpal Singh took oath as Lok Sabha member, his mother said that speaking in favour of Punjab 's youth did not make him a " Khalistani supporter ".

"He (Amritpal) is not a Khalistani supporter. Does speaking about Punjab, saving the youth of Punjab make him a Khalistani supporter?", Balwinder Kaur, Singh's mother said.

"He contested the election within the ambit of the Constitution and now he should not be called (a Khalistani supporter). He has taken an oath under the Constitution of India," she added.

Amritpal Singh won as an independent MP from Khadoor Sahib in Punjab.

He is detained under the National Security Act for his involvement in radical activities, notably a February incident where he confronted police while attempting to release an associate.

He has been lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam.

Amritpal took oath as Lok Sabha MP on July 5 along with another jailed Kashmiri leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid. The two were out on parole.
