Eldest women voters of Haryana's Jind district emerge as icon for other voters

JIND: On the one side candidates have put their all efforts to win lok sabha election , similarly, elderly women in Haryana's Jind district voved to cast their votes by visiting polling booths in the election to be held on May 25 under 6th phase. However, the election commission of India (ECI) has given an option for people aged above 85 to cast their votes while sitting at homes nonetheless, several elderly women decided to visit polling booths as a mark of motivation to others for taking part in the general election of India.

Bartho Dev (105), a native of Malsari Khera village and the eldest voter of Safidon town of Jind district which comes under Sonipat lok sabha seat, informed officials that she will cast her vote by visiting the polling booth which will be set up in her village. However, Safidon SDM Manish Phogat offered to provide a vehicle on the voting day but she refused saying that she will go by foot to cast her vote along with other voters of villagers. Thereafter, SDM offered her an invitation letter for taking part in the general election which she accepted happily.

Similarly, Chandarmukhi (100), a native of Khapar village of Uchana Kalan village, wished to vote at the polling booth and refused to accept the offer and vehicle facility. She told the Uchana Kalan SDM Gulzar Malik that she is seeking to meet other women of her village on that day in the school. "I am willing to visit polling booths like past elections. I am able to walk and not require any assistance as well. Therefore, I will accompany other women voters on that day," she added.


However, few other women who are above 100 year wished to cast their votes from homes only. They have been suffering old age ailments following which they decided to take part in the polling from homes only.

Ram Devi, (108) a native of Jind city city who is unable to listen and speak at this stage of her life nodded to cast her vote at the polling booth. Moreover, she urged other voters by spreading a written message on a slate to take part in the voting. The district administration officials have assured to provide a vehicle and all family members will accompany her, said her family members.


Talking to TOI, Mohammad Imran Raza, deputy commissioner of Jind district said that there are over 13,000 voters including male and female who are above 85. "We have asked them to cast votes from home as per the instructions and guidelines issued by ECI. But it's a happy and proud moment for us that many of them have emerged as brand ambassadors and wished to visit polling booths. They will encourage other voters and district administration will provide them all facilities," he added.
