MUMBAI: The CBI arrested an assistant director of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ( FSSAI ) while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 1.2 lakh in a bar from a manager of a private laboratory. Along with him, a director, a manager, and one more employee of a Thane-based Reliable Analytical Laboratories company were arrested on Sunday. The accused were produced before the court on Monday and remanded into CBI custody until May 8.
During the search of the accused's premises, the CBI recovered Rs 37.3 lakh in cash, 45 grams of gold, and documents related to immovable properties. The agency is examining the details of the immovable properties. The lab, a chain of chemical laboratories, had been notified for the analysis of samples forwarded by the FSSAI. The arrested assistant director of FSSAI, Amol Jagtap, had demanded the bribe to clear the company’s pending bills.
The CBI, through its sources, learned about the involvement of the company and Jagtap in corrupt practices , which led to the registration of an FIR on Saturday after examining the details. Jagtap had asked the manager of the company, Harshal Chougule, to meet him at a bar in the city along with the demanded bribe money. The CBI laid a trap around the bar and caught Jagtap red-handed while accepting the bribe from Chougule. Subsequently, the CBI arrested Vikas Bhardwaj, a director of Reliable Analytical Laboratories, along with one of his employees, Gurunath Dubule, in the case.
It was alleged that Jagtap, who is posted at FSSAI’s regional office in Mumbai, in connivance with a number of intermediaries, is involved in illegal and corrupt practices. These practices include demanding and accepting bribes from Food Business Operators and other interested parties.
