Google Photos rolling out AI-powered 'Ask Photos' feature to select users

Google has begun rolling out its new AI-powered " Ask Photos " feature to select users in the United States, following a waitlist sign-up period that opened last month. The feature, which replaces the "Search" tab in the Google Photos app, allows users to interact with their photo libraries using natural language queries .

According to a report from 9to5Google, the rollout appears to be a server-side update, affecting both Android and iOS devices. Users who gain access to "Ask Photos" will find it as a new tab along the bottom bar of the Photos app.

The feature enables complex searches within personal photo collections. Users can ask questions like "Show me Halloween costumes over the years" or "When did my child learn to swim?" leveraging AI to interpret and respond to these queries.

Upon first use, users are prompted to review the feature's functionality, confirm data access permissions, and verify that correct names are attached to people in their photos. Additionally, users need to set relationships for individuals and pets in their library.

9to5Google's initial testing suggests that "Ask Photos" performs best with queries about people and places, while questions about specific events or objects may yield less accurate results. The feature appears to use location data to refine searches, potentially improving results for queries about activities or meals at specific locations.

While not yet available to all users, those who joined the waitlist in recent weeks are likely to see the feature activated soon. Google has stated that "Ask Photos" is currently exclusive to U.S. users.

Interested users who haven't already signed up can still join the waitlist through Google's official channels. As the rollout continues, more users are expected to gain access to this ‘Ask Photos’ in the coming weeks.
