Elon Musk has shared a video of a historical event on his social media platform X (earlier Twitter). The tech billionaire reposted the video showcasing the first-ever views of Earth's polar regions captured from space, which was originally shared by his rocket company SpaceX . The footage, taken during SpaceX's Fram2 mission , features the Dragon capsule orbiting Earth over the North and South Poles. Launched on March 31 from NASA 's Kennedy Space Center, the Falcon 9 spacecraft took 10 minutes to reach low-Earth orbit from liftoff. The Fram2 mission crew, which includes a crew of four private astronauts , has since been uploading photos from their polar orbit, showing views of Earth. This marks the first time humans have orbited Earth's poles .
Reposting the original shared by SpaceX, the company’s CEO Musk wrote: “This is the first time humans have been in orbit around the poles of Earth!”
Later on, he shared another longer footage from the Fram2 mission and wrote: “The first astronauts to orbit the poles.”
SpaceX's Fram2 mission: What we know so far
SpaceX’s Fram2 mission is led by Chun Wang, a Maltese entrepreneur and cryptocurrency investor. The mission is named after the Norwegian polar exploration ship "Fram," which conducted expeditions to both of Earth's poles between 1893 and 1912.
The crew includes Jannicke Mikkelsen from Norway, Rabea Rogge from Germany, and Eric Philips from Australia. Their objectives involve observing the polar regions and conducting over 20 experiments, such as studying human health in space and analyzing auroral light emissions.
The mission is planned to last nearly four days. After completing their tasks, the Resilience spacecraft will perform a deorbit burn with its trunk attached—a procedural adjustment to ensure controlled reentry—and is scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean.
