Former NFL player turned football analyst Michael Strahan has said that athletes must not just live off sports forever but must take chances in life. The former New York Giants player met former NBA player Carmelo Anthony on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, where he revealed why he doesn’t respect all of his fellow athletes. As an excerpt of the podcast was shared online, the internet remained divided on Strahan’s views.
Michael Strahan says athletes must not live off sports foreverOn the podcast, host Monica McNutt asked Michael Strahan about the level of respect he has for fellow athletes currently or previously in the NBA and NFL. As if showing his disinterest in mingling with old or new athletes, Michael Strahan said, "Not everybody...It's not that I disrespect you, I don't want to kick it with you, we're not on the same wavelength. Some guys are building and some guys are just in the house."
When host McNutt asked Strahan how he differentiates between the two kinds of people, he replied, "When somebody literally thinks what they've done in the past is all they're gonna do with their life and they're living off that, for the rest of their life.”
Giving an example of the character Al Bundy from the TV show Married… with Children, Strahan said athletes should not live off sports forever. “I just respect someone who does not look and go, 'Oh. I was great at that, like Al Bundy, you're stuck, you had those three...four touchdowns in one game at Polk High, he's wearing that old crusty jersey with your hand down your pants. I like to see people change up, move...take chances," he added.
Social media reacts to Michael Strahan’s statement
The internet, however, had mixed reactions to Strahan’s comments. An X user said, “So much easier to say when you’ve made millions playing a game or talking. Chasing your tail to pay bills can consume a person’s whole life when they are digging holes or painting houses. Not everyone gets lucky hard work or not. Can’t listen to this. Gibberish.” Another wrote on the networking platform, “Yes you can? It’s people making well over 100 million and that’s not set for life?” One more said, “Unfortunately Strahan and the real world with us peons, they call that, ‘not sticking with it’. It can be frowned upon sometimes.”
But some also agreed with Strahan. An X user commented on the video, “I don't disagree with him. It's a principle applicable across all life histories. Smart guy. It's obvious he's a philosopher at heart.” “Good for him. What a fantastic attitude,” wrote another. A fan also called him a “preach brother.”

Michael Strahan played on the defensive end for New York Giants throughout his 15-year NFL career. After retiring from the sport, he became a football analyst on Fox NFL Sunday. He had his second innings as a chat show host and co-hosted ABC's Good Morning America and Live! with Kelly and Michael with Kelly Ripa. He also won two Daytime Emmy Awards for his hosting skills. It seems he is fond of taking chances, as he also traveled into space on Blue Origin NS-19's suborbital space flight in 2021.
