Jaipur: The draft of much-awaited Rajasthan Sports Policy 2024 is ready and it will soon be finalised. The new policy will aim to focus on identification of priority sports ‘based on high participation, past performance and raw talent in both Olympic and non-Olympic sports’. Three categories, Priority I, Priority II and Priority III, have been suggested and cricket fails to find a place in the identified sports.

Rajasthan State Sports Council (RSSC) secretary Sohan Ram Choudhary confirmed that the draft is ready. “Yes, the draft of the new sports policy is ready and it will soon be implemented,” he said.

The key features of the new policy that will replace Sports Policy 2013, include a monthly pension of Rs 20,000, and medical insurance of Rs 10 lakh for international and Rs 5 lakh for national athletes from the state. “The government has launched a new pension scheme for international athletes, para-athletes, and coaches who have dedicated their lives to sports. Athletes and coaches who are not employed in any government jobs or receiving any pension from the government will be considered under this scheme,” the draft shared by a source mentions.

The medical insurance will ‘provide basic medical coverage, sports-specific coverage, rehabilitation and physical therapy, and coverage for pre-existing medical conditions and injuries during their sporting career’.

“Athletes representing the state of Rajasthan in national competitions or games recognised by the IOA, as well as athletes being trained in sports academies, Centre of Excellence, and High-Performance Centre, will be covered under this scheme,” the draft states.

Moreover, apart from the already existing Maharana Pratap and Guru Vashisht awards, the government is planning to felicitate ‘exceptional contributors in sports’ which will include awards for outstanding sports administrator, organisation/ institution, best performing sports association, sports journalists, technical official, technical staff, private coach and ground staff.
