Malik Beasley faces $2.25 million lawsuit from agency amid NBA gambling probe fallout

Send Push
Malik Beasley just delivered his best NBA season—but off the court, it’s all unraveling. The Detroit Pistons have hit pause on a $42 million deal, his former agency is suing him for $2.25 million, and a federal gambling probe is casting serious doubt on his future. From record-setting threes to legal landmines, Beasley’s offseason has taken a dramatic turn—and it could cost him more than just money.
Malik Beasley’s offseason unravels as Pistons pause contract talks, agency suesBeasley, 28, earned nearly $60 million throughout his nine seasons in the NBA and had his best season in 2024–25 with Detroit—averaging 16.3 points per game, playing all 82 games, and shattering franchise records by sinking 319 three-pointers. On the court, the momentum was clear; off it, complications grew. Hazan Sports , who signed Beasley in November 2023, claims he defaulted on a $650,000 advance and breached an exclusivity clause when he changed representation in February 2025.

In April, Hazan Sports launched a lawsuit in New York, seeking $2.25 million to cover the unpaid advance, liquidated damages, and attorney fees. The lawyers have pointed out that they’ve only received a trickle of sporadic payments and vague assurances since Beasley canceled the deal on February 27. Hazan is advocating for settlement negotiations before free agency, asserting that Beasley’s financial health — and his ability to pay — relies on landing a big NBA contract.

In the meantime, the Eastern District of New York is conducting a live inquiry of whether Beasley was part of prop-betting future-season with Milwaukee in 202324. Some shaky betting patterns were found by sports books on Bucks games, especially on rebounds prop bets, in January of 2024.

No criminal charges have been filed yet; Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney , stresses that "an investigation is not a charge" and that his client hasn’t been accused of wrongdoing. Still, the NBA and Pistons have halted serious negotiations regarding the rumored three-year, $42 million contract.

Right now, Beasley’s next steps are in jeopardy due to two significant problems: a breach-of-contract lawsuit from Hazan Sports and a federal investigation into gambling. The lawsuit is about a specific loan of $650,000, but the investigation could have much more serious repercussions—think fines, suspensions, or even an NBA ban, like what happened to Jontay Porter in 2024.

Malik Beasley’s impressive season could pave the way for a life-changing payday—but instead, he’s entangled in a storm of legal and regulatory troubles. He’s dealing with a $2.25 million lawsuit from his previous agency and a federal gambling investigation that has put a $42 million contract with the Detroit Pistons on ice, leaving Beasley with an offseason of uncertainty.
