GTA 6 trailers: Full breakdown of story, characters & what we know so far

Rockstar Games has posted two official Grand Theft Auto VI trailers, giving us the deepest look yet at the game's storyline, characters, and setting. Although the full release is yet to come, the trailers already broke records and set the world abuzz with anticipation. Here is a complete summary of what we currently know.


Trailer timelines



Trailer 1 – Dropped on December 4, 2023, unveiled Vice City and the game's leading duo.




Trailer 2 – Released on May 6, 2025, diving deeper into world-building, characters, and gameplay.




The game officially releases on May 26, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.


Setting: Welcome to Leonida


GTA 6 is set in Leonida, Rockstar's fictionalized version of Florida. The map is based around Vice City, with wider environments that vary from urban city blocks to tropical islands, swampy backwoods, and coastal highways. Rockstar claims this is their biggest, most detailed open world to date.


Main protagonists: Lucia & Jason


Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval are crime partners and lovers, battling their way through Vice City's criminal underbelly. Lucia is a gritty ex-convict with a survivalist bite, and Jason adds military order and street intelligence.

Vice City – Neon-lit city based on Miami


Vice City Beach – A South Beach-style waterfront


Leonida Keys – Island chain inspired by the Florida Keys


Grassrivers – Swampland similar to the Everglades


Port Gellhorn – Inspired by Panama City


Ambrosia – Countryside reminiscent of Clewiston


Mount Kalaga – Mountainous interior region


Leonida State Prison – A prison facility potentially connected to Lucia's past


Supporting Characters


Cal Hampton – A paranoid, laid-back associate of Brian, Cal is content with his quiet, secluded life until Jason’s bigger plans pull him into the action.


Boobie Ike – A Vice City legend who built an empire from the streets, Boobie’s main focus is his partnership with Dre'Quan at Only Raw Records.


Drequan Priest – Organized crime-connected local hustler


Real Dimez (Bae-Luxe & Roxy) – Ambitious female rap group signed to Only Raw Records


Raúl Bautista – Experienced bank robber with high-profile scores


Brian Heder – Classic smuggler who works in the Leonida Keys

Gameplay & Buzz


Shot completely on PS5, the trailers show cinematics and gameplay blending smoothly, improved AI, and social media-inspired cultural satire. Trailer 2 had already surpassed 475 million views, setting the ground for Rockstar's most ambitious endeavor to date.
