Bhai Dooj festival is one of the most significant festivals of Hindus, which celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters. In some regions, the festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated as Bhau Beej , Bhai Dwitiya, Bhrathri Dwitiya and also Yama Dwitiya. This day marks the end of Diwali festivities as this is the last day of the celebration. Bhai Dooj is celebrated on Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. Bhai Dooj 2024: Significance

Bhai Dooj holds a great religious and cultural significance in Hindu religion. This day is dedicated to all the brothers and sisters. They celebrate this day with immense joy and happiness as the festival celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters. On this auspicious day of Bhai Dooj, tilak ceremony is performed and sister apply tilak on their brother's forehead, and give them dried coconut. They pray for the long life and well being of their brothers and in return brothers also give some gifts to their sisters as token of affection.

Bhai Dooj 2024: How it is celebrated?

The festival of Bhau Beej is celebrated in Maharashtra and Goa. Bhau refers to brothers in Marathi. They celebrate this festival in the evening and sisters offer prayers to the God for the well being and long life of their brothers.

In West Bengal, Bhai Dooj is celebrated as Phota festival. On this special day, sisters observe fast, apply tilak on their brother's forehead, offer them food and then they break their fast.

In the states of Uttar Pradesh, sisters give their brothers a dried coconut after putting tilak on their forehead.

In Nepal, the festival is celebrated as Bhai Tihar . Tihar means Tilak and sisters perform the Tilak ceremony.

Bhai Dooj 2024: Puja Rituals

1. Brothers and sisters get up early in the morning, take a holy bath and wear nice traditional clothes.
2. Some people perform this ceremony to Ladoo Gopal Ji Lord Ganesha.
3. Sisters prepare savories, different meals and sweets for their brothers.
4. Either sister visits her brother or brother goes to his sister's place to celebrate the festival if they are married otherwise they celebrate it at their home.
5. Sister decorate the plate with roli, unbroken rice or akshat, dried coconut, sweet and the gift, which she wants to give to her brother.
6. Put tilak first and then akshat (unbroken rice). Put tilak on dried coconut also and give it to your brother and wish for his good health and long life.
7. In return, brothers touch the feet of their sisters and seek blessings.
8. Brothers also give something to their sisters either money as a token of affection and respect or some gift of her choice.
9. Sister serve food to their brothers and make this festival more memorable.
10. After completing all the rituals, they break their fast and eat sattvik food.
