US probes Tesla recall of 2 million vehicles over Autopilot, citing concerns

WASHINGTON: US auto safety regulators has announced an investigation into the adequacy of Tesla's recent recall of over 2 million vehicles, initiated last December to implement enhanced Autopilot safety features .

The move comes in response to concerns raised by crash events following the installation of the recalled software update , as well as preliminary tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) on remedied vehicles.

The NHTSA said it was opening an investigation after identified concerns due to crash events after vehicles had the recalled software update installed "and results from preliminary NHTSA tests of remedied vehicles".

The agency indicated that Tesla's acknowledgment of certain issues with the recall process, including the requirement for owners to opt in and the ease of reversing the update by drivers, prompted the inquiry.

While Tesla has released software updates to address potential safety issues, the NHTSA noted that these updates have not been officially integrated into the recall process or recognized as remedies for defects posing unreasonable safety risks.

NHTSA cited Tesla's statement "that a portion of the remedy both requires the owner to opt in and allows a driver to readily reverse it."
