Nagpur: The long-neglected and perilous stretch near the Pardi underpass, infamous for being a danger zone for daily commuters, has finally seem some safety upgrades. The once chaotic area, riddled with open pits, scattered cement blocks, and unmarked construction hazards, now shows signs of order and caution — though much more is still needed to make it truly safe.
In recent days, barricades have been placed around portions of the under-construction zone, while deep, open manholes and ditches were partially filled and cordoned off using caution tape. Some sections that posed serious threats just a week ago are now blocked to prevent pedestrian and vehicular accidents. While these steps brought a degree of relief, they are largely temporary and minimal, falling short of addressing the broader safety lapses.
These developments come in the wake of persistent public outcry and a series of reports by TOI, highlighting the dire conditions of the Pardi stretch. The stretch had witnessed frequent near-misses and accidents over the past several months due to poor lighting, lack of signage, and abandoned construction materials. Only after consistent badgering by TOI and pressure from citizens did the authorities finally initiate some groundwork.
Despite these initial steps, the underpass remains officially closed due to unresolved pipeline-related issues. Moreover, key safety components like permanent fencing, directional signage, reflectors, and controlled pedestrian access are still missing. Commuters have welcomed the progress, noting improved vehicle movement and clearer pathways. However, many point out that the improvements are surface-level and inadequate for the long term.
Meanwhile, it is not yet clear when the underpass's reopening or a permanent resolution to the safety hazards will be taken. The hope now is that the current momentum, sparked by public pressure, continues, pushing authorities to not just respond — but to act decisively.
