'Terrorists May Attack': US Issues Level 2 Travel Advisory For Germany

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Germany "due to terrorism."

"Terrorist groups keep planning attacks in Germany. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning. They target tourist locations and transportation hubs. They also target markets/shopping malls and local government facilities. They target hotels, clubs, and restaurants. They also attack places of worship, parks, and major sporting and cultural events. They target schools, airports, and other public areas," the State Department said in the advisory.

Travelers are urged to "be aware of your surroundings when traveling to tourist locations and crowded public venues," follow local authorities' instructions, and "monitor local media for updates and adjust plans accordingly."

In March, Canada also issued a travel advisory for Germany, advising travelers to "exercise a high degree of caution due to the threat of terrorism."

"There is a threat of terrorism in Europe. Terrorists have carried out attacks in several European cities. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time. Targets could include, government buildings, including schools
places of worship, airports and other transportation hubs and networks, public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, Christmas markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners," the advisory issued by Canada stated.

Additionally, the United Kingdom's foreign travel advice highlighted recent terror incidents in Germany, such as a knife attack in Dresden in 2020, two mass shootings at bars in Hanau in the same year, and a fatal shooting near a synagogue in Halle in 2019.
