The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee made a shocking call after the 2024 T20 World Cup and they snubbed Hardik Pandya from the T20I captaincy. Hardik, who was Rohit's deputy in the ICC event, looked set to replace him in the top role following his retirement. But the selection committee stunned one and all but handing the job to Suryakumar Yadav.Interestingly, both Rohit and Suryakumar played under Hardik at Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2024. Hardik played under Rohit at the T20 WC. Suryakumar was Hardik's captain in the T20I series against Sri Lanka.Should MI retain Hardik as captain, Rohit and Suryakumar - if they stay with MI - will once again play under the all-rounder in IPL 2025. Speaking to the media before the first T20I against Bangladesh, Suryakumar broke his silence on captaincy ambitions in IPL and namedropped Rohit Sharma."Really enjoying this new role (as India captain). When I was playing under Rohit bhai’s captaincy in MI, I used to give my inputs whatever I felt at that time. I captained against Sri Lanka previously against Australia and South Africa also. I have learnt from other captains on how to take the team forward. Let's see how it goes. Rest you will know in due course of time," he said.A clear word on Suryakumar, Hardik and Rohit will be out on October 31, when the IPL franchises submit the retention list to the BCCI. A franchise can retain a maximum of six players.MI made a huge call by bringing back Hardik and naming him captain before IPL 2024. He could receive a long rope by the franchise. The franchise would also want to retain Suryakumar and its five-time IPL-winning captain, Rohit. It remains to be seen if MI surprise everyone by changing their captain and handing the job to Suryakumar. Hardik is part of the Bangladesh T20I series and will play under Suryakumar's captaincy again.
