Not Hardik Pandya! Virender Sehwag Wants 24-Year-Old To Become India Captain After Rohit Sharma Retirement

India finally ended their long 11-year-wait for an ICC trophy as they defeated South Africa in the final to lift the T20 World Cup 2024, thus winning the trophy for the second time in history after the 2007 victory. It was a bittersweet moment for Indian fans, as Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20Is after the final. Now, with age catching up, Rohit might also retire from ODIs and Tests in the near future as well. In that case, the leading candidate to replace him is Hardik Pandya. However, Virender Sehwaf feels Shubman Gill is the ideal candidate. In an interaction with Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag said that Shubman Gill will play all three formats in the future and had a brilliant year in all three in 2023. He said that the selectors had made the right call to declare Gill as the captain for the ongoing five-match series against Zimbabwe, and he can replace Rohit Sharma once he takes retirement from ODIs and Tests.“I think Shubman Gill will play all the formats for India in the future. He had a brilliant year in 2023 in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. He was unlucky not to be a part of the T20 World Cup 2024-winning squad. But I think it’s the right decision because, when Rohit Sharma takes retirement from Tests and ODIs, Shubman Gill seems to be the right choice for the captaincy. So, I think the selectors have chosen the right captain in the form of Shubman Gill,” Sehwag stated. However, Shubman Gill has not had a good start to his captaincy career for India. In the first T20I against Zimbabwe, India suffered a crushing defeat, as they were bundled out for 102 chasing a score of 115. This was the first defeat for India in 2024, thus breaking their 12-match winning streak in the shortest format of the game. After the match Shubman Gill owned up to the fact they looked a bit rusty. He even blamed himself for not staying at the crease till the end."We bowled pretty well, we let ourselves down in the field. We were not up to standard and everyone looked a bit rusty. We spoke about taking time and enjoying our batting but it didn’t pan out that way. Halfway through we had lost 5 wickets, would’ve been best for us if I stayed there till the end, very disappointed with the way I got out and the rest of the match panned out,"he said.
