Man Wakes Up From 10-Year Coma in Wife's Resolute Care

A comatose man in China woke up 10 years after slipping into a vegetative state from a heart attack – thanks to the unwavering care of his devoted wife. Sun Hongxia, of Anhui province, said her husband had been semi-consciousness following his 2014 cardiac arrest but it was “worthwhile” in the end.

Social media was touched by the tale of the couple’s love after their video went viral. The clip shows a tearful Hongxia seated next to her husband, who had recently awakened from his coma, in the hospital room and telling him about the decade-long journey.

“Although I’m very tired, I feel all is worthwhile as the family is reunited,” she told Dawan News.

Hongxia recalled the heartache of seeing her husband suddenly slip into a coma after the heart. She explained that the thought of her two children kept her going, adding that she “wanted to set a good example” for the kids.

Nevertheless, looking after her husband for 10 years required an immovable resolve, time and energy - all dedicated to keeping him comfortable through the coma.

The decade-long state of unconsciousness wasn’t without its problems, with the patient needing a tracheotomy to breathe and a urinary catheter, according to the South China Morning Post.

“His eyes opened little by little,” Hongxia recounted.

To her husband’s father, 84, she is “better than a daughter” and there’s no one like her.

It wasn’t the first time a Chinese woman’s love and care brought her husband back from years-long-coma. In May last year, the internet was moved by another incident where a comatose man woke up after three years, with his partner bursting into tears.

Commenting on the recent video, a person wrote: “It’s unbelievable how such examples of true love, selflessness and dedication still exist in a world where couples divorce each other over the pettiest things.”
