James 'JP' Staples: Ole Miss Fraternity Demands Student's Expulsion Over Racial Slurs Against Black Woman

Send Push

Pressure is mounting on the University of Mississippi - Ole Miss with several in the community demanding action against students who mocked a sole black protester last week. The woman named Jaylin R. Smith was subjected to racial slurs, boos and even faced 'Lizzo' chants. Now, the student bodies and fraternities at Ole Miss have stepped up in demanding the expulsion of James 'JP' Staples, Connor Moore, and Rouse Davis Boyce. The NAACP UM's chapter has slammed the counterprotesters by publically naming them. In addition, Ole Miss Phi Delta Theta Fraternity revoked the membership of JP Staples, who went on to make monkey gestures during a standoff between pro-Palestine student protesters and others.

"UM NAACP requests the expulsion of individuals involved in the use of racial slurs, intimidation, and vulgar behavior exhibited during Thursday’s protest," the fraternity's post on Instagram read.

The varsity earlier launched an investigation into the misconduct of students on Thursday during a ceasefire protest, that aimed at demanding peace in Gaza. However, the scenes turned ugly after some of the counterprotesters started making fun of the 24-year-old black student, who bypassed the encirclement where the demonstrations were taking place.

The fraternities at Ole Miss further quoted Vice-Chancellor (VP) Glenn Boyce's message to the community after protests sparked tensions on the campus. So much so that an evacuation drive had to be carried out to bring back the situation under control.

"As a community known for caring about each other, we will not tolerate discrimination, intimidation, harassment or bias of anyone in our campus community. To be clear, people who say horrible things to people because of who they are will not find shelter or comfort on this campus. All of us have a responsibility to take seriously our commitment to upholding a safe and welcoming campus environment," VP Boyce remarked in the full statement accessed by TimesNow.

Demanding an explosion, the NAACP UM's chapter called the counterprotesters "primary perpetrators," who made racist remarks. The students mentioned in the fraternity's post are:

James "JP" Staples, DFW, Texas, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity
Connor Moore, Junior, Indianola, MS, Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity
Rouse Davis Boyce, Flora, MS, Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity

Anger grew against JP Staples after the video from the protest went viral online. The student blocked all his online channels and deleted his social media handles after several people on the internet identified him as the one who raised racist slurs during the protest.
