Bengaluru: While the construction work for Pink Line metro below the Kamaraj Road is still underway, the traffic police has decided to open one arm of the stretch. The decision has been taken on a temporary basis to facilitate commuters going from MG Road towards Cubbon Road. This arm is set to be opened by mid-May. Earlier, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had announced that one-half of the road will be reopened by April-end. However, it was delayed, and a new estimated date has been given.

By making it a one-way road for now, the traffic police intends to reduce the road congestion at MG roads where a huge traffic snarls, especially during peak hours.

DCP Traffic -West Anita B Haddannavar, who inspected the road recently said, “We are willing to open up this connecting road at the earliest. It is because of the traffic congestion on MG Road. Public has also been demanding to open this arm as those who wish to visit Commercial Street have to take a roundabout. We are planning to allow traffic only one-way for now -- MG Road to Cubbon Road,” quoted by a media report.

Pink Line Metro Station
Kamaraj Road, running 220 metres, had to be closed down in view of the MG Road underground Metro station of the Pink Line (Nagawara to Kalena Agrahara) below it. The new metro stretch will serve as an interchange with the operational Purple Line.

The closure was done in 2019. Due to which, those who wanted to head to Shivajinagar or Commercial Street had to go up to Anil Kumble Circle or Trinity Circle first and then take a turn. It caused traffic congestion at several points on MG Road.

Chief Public Relations Officer, BMRCL, BL Yashavanth Chavan said, “The construction work is going on continuously. Inspection has also been completed by the Traffic police. They are now planning another inspection. We are looking at the partial opening by mid-May.”

While giving details on the status of work on the road, another senior official said, “Only 8 metres width of the road is being restored for now. A 2.5-metres-long footpath is being laid as well. However, the remaining 12 metres will remain shut for six to nine months. It is because of sending equipment below for the underground station,” quoted by the New Indian Express.
