Bengaluru: IMD Issues Heatwave Alert for Most Parts of Karnataka; Is Bangalore Under the Radar?

Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm across most parts of Karnataka, issuing a heatwave alert for five consecutive days starting Thursday. With temperatures expected to soar, people are cautioned to avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm to prevent heat-related illnesses. Bengaluru, already grappling with a water crisis, is under intense heat, with temperatures reaching April's second-highest recorded temperature on Tuesday at 37.6 degrees Celsius.

Is Bengaluru Under a Heatwave?
According to the IMD, Bengaluru is not under a heatwave alert yet. However, residents are advised to avoid stepping out during peak heat hours and stay hydrated.

Puviarasan further stated that while Bengaluru's urban and rural districts haven't received a direct heatwave alert, there's a projected uptick in maximum temperatures, necessitating awareness and preparedness. Election officials are kept abreast of weather updates to ensure polling arrangements accommodate the prevailing conditions.

Director-in-charge of IMD Bengaluru, N Puviarasan, outlined the criteria for issuing heatwave alerts, citing a threshold of 40 degrees Celsius for maximum temperatures or a deviation of 4.5 degrees Celsius above normal. The alert and warnings have been specifically directed towards districts like Vijayapura, Yadgir, Koppal, and others.

In response, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Karnataka, Manoj Kumar Meena, assured that measures are in place to address the impact of rising temperatures, especially in areas witnessing heightened heat. Special medical kits have been dispatched to polling booths to cater to the needs of both staff and voters. Additionally, health officers and ambulances will be stationed at all booths to provide immediate assistance to those affected by sunstroke and dehydration.

On April 26, the temperature will range from 24 to 37 degrees Celsius with a mainly clear sky. On April 27 and 28, temperatures will range from 23 to 36 degrees Celsius with mainly clear skies.


Details of Karnataka's Heatwave Alert
The scorching weather, characterized by high heat and humidity, is forecasted to engulf various regions of India, including Konkan and Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Specifically for Karnataka, an orange alert has been issued, indicating elevated mercury levels and an increased risk of heat-related ailments, particularly for those exposed to prolonged sunlight.
