In a powerful demonstration of linguistic pride and national unity, the Rajbhasha Vibhag of the Ministry of Home Affairs organized a landmark event at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Drawing an impressive crowd of nearly 8,000 officials and Hindi language enthusiasts from across India, the event was a vibrant celebration of the Hindi language and its evolving stature in contemporary domains such as science, commerce, education, and administration.
The event was formally inaugurated by Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, who emphasized the inclusive and adaptive nature of Hindi. He lauded Hindi’s ability to assimilate vocabulary from other Indian languages and described it as a unifying force with growing relevance in fields traditionally dominated by English and regional tongues.
Shri Shah underscored the importance of translation work in strengthening ties among Indian languages and shared that the Rajbhasha Vibhag has established a dedicated wing for translation efforts. He also highlighted the ongoing development of a monumental dictionary project, ‘Shabd Sindhu’, aimed at standardizing and enriching Hindi vocabulary in specialized disciplines.
Prominent personalities present at the event included Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Vice President of the Parliamentary Hindi Language Committee Bhartrihari Mahtab, Member of Parliament Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi, and renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murthy, all of whom emphasized the cultural and functional significance of Hindi as a bridge among diverse Indian communities.
Exhibition Showcasing Hindi InnovationA significant highlight of the event was a large-scale exhibition where the Rajbhasha wings of various organizations set up stalls to display innovative efforts in promoting Hindi language use and technology. Among these, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) drew special attention with its multi-faceted exhibition stall, which displayed four major themes:
While the first three themes were presented in digital format across three large screens, the fourth was available in print as a free booklet, underscoring the constitutional foundation of Hindi in India’s democratic framework.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a noteworthy visit to the IGNCA stall, spending four to five minutes attentively viewing the exhibitions. Professor Arun Bhardwaj walked him through the displays, highlighting IGNCA’s work in Hindi research and digitization. As a mark of scholarly appreciation, three books by IGNCA President Ram Bahadur Rai were presented to the Minister during the visit.
Public Engagement and ResponseThe IGNCA’s efforts were met with enthusiasm from the public, as 1,000 to 1,200 visitors explored the exhibition, with over 150 individuals recording their impressions and feedback in a dedicated register. Visitors expressed appreciation for the visually rich and intellectually curated presentations that effectively showcased Hindi’s historical depth and contemporary relevance.
The 50th anniversary of the Rajbhasha Vibhag was not only a celebration of its institutional journey but also a symbolic reaffirmation of the importance of Hindi in a multilingual, rapidly evolving India. By honoring its linguistic roots while also pushing for innovation and inclusivity, the Rajbhasha Vibhag has set a clear direction for the next fifty years—making Hindi not just a language of tradition, but one of knowledge, progress, and national identity.
