Tourists and locals were taken by surprise on Friday as thousands of blue sea creatures washed up on Cala Mandia beach in Manacor, Majorca, creating an extraordinary spectacle and prompting a warning from authorities.
Known as velella velella, or "barquetes de Sant Pere" (Saint Peter's small boats), these tiny organisms have a distinctive sail that allows them to catch the wind and float on the sea's surface.
Despite their resemblance to the dangerous Portuguese man o' war, these creatures are relatively harmless, though they can cause mild skin irritation if touched.
While the "invasion" of these creatures is not uncommon, especially in the spring, it can still be quite a shock to beachgoers.
In addition to Cala Mandia, similar events have occurred at other beaches in the Balearics, including Camp de Mar in 2022 and Cala Molins in Cala Sant Vicenç in 2021.
The unexpected appearance of the velella velella is largely due to wind and sea currents, with thousands of them washing ashore when conditions are right.
On Monday, a similar occurrence was reported at Puerto Soller, where the sheer volume of these creatures led to a strong odor as they decomposed. Beach-cleaning crews were quickly dispatched to clear the area.
Authorities have issued a warning to beachgoers to avoid touching the velella velella, despite their relatively low risk, to prevent any possible irritation or discomfort.
The phenomenon is generally seen as a sign of the changing seasons and the onset of spring.
Videos shared on social media show the astonishing sight of thousands of these blue creatures scattered across the sand, their tiny sails glistening in the sun.
Though the spectacle has drawn curious onlookers, beachgoers are advised to stay clear of the affected areas until they have been properly cleaned.
