Thousands of Brits are being stopped at airport security over new baggage rules which have led to long queues.
New CT scanners are being installed at airports across the country in the hope they will speed up security queues while allowing passengers to pack as 2 litres of liquids but some airports have faced difficulties as passengers become confused with the new rules.
Birmingham Airport says more than 15 percent of its passengers are seeing their carry-on bags rejected by security because they think the 100ml rule has been ditched.
About 772,000 passengers passed through the airport in February 2024 meaning about 3,860 daily passengers are confused over liquid rules.
While the airport is planning to implement the new technology, which the government wants to see all UK airports using, it is yet to fully install the new scanners.
As a result, those who think the airport already has the technology are causing long delays at the security gates as they are told to reduce their liquids to 100ml.
A spokesman from Birmingham Airport said: "We wish to remind our customers that existing security restrictions remain in place.
"This can be confusing to our customers and on average 15 percent of bags are rejected as they are not compliant with current security restrictions.
"For each customer, a non-compliant bag adds 10 minutes on top of their security search time."
As a result passengers across the UK are being urged to check liquid rules at both their departure and return airports - especially because the rules could be different.
Last year, the Department of Transport implemented a deadline of June 2024 for airports to have the new scanners in place.
