has Honda's backing as he continues to put forward a case to replace at in 2025. The Japanese racer is being pitted against team-mate over the final six races of the year as he stakes a claim for a promotion.

Tsunoda has enjoyed a strong campaign in 2024, dominating team-mate Daniel Ricciardo throughout the opening 18 rounds of the season and notching up 24 of VCARB's 34 points. Despite these impressive figures, the 24-year-old has rarely felt like a serious contender to step up should Perez falter.

Red Bull's incumbent second driver is facing a tense wait this winter. As McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes continue to gain speed, the pressure is increasing for him to improve his performances. Perez is without a podium in 13 Grands Prix heading into Sunday's race in Texas.

Should Christian Horner decide to make a change, Tsunoda is a compelling option, but Honda wants to bolster his chances with a private test in Red Bull machinery before the end of the campaign.

Speaking to ahead of the , Koji Watanabe (Honda Racing Company president) said: "Regarding Tsunoda, our goal is for him to work hard and secure a seat at Red Bull Racing.

"We believe he has the talent. Of course, driver decisions are ultimately up to the team, but as a partner, we've strongly requested that Tsunoda be given the chance to drive and test in a Red Bull car.

"We want to at least give him the opportunity to showcase his ability. I've also spoken directly with Christian about this. He hasn't ruled it out. Nothing has been decided yet, but I think we need to proceed properly."

This request is a strange one in F1 terms. It is rare that a driver competing full-time in the World Championship will complete a private test for another team on the grid. Such is the unique relationship between Red Bull and VCARB, this arrangement would be possible.

Watanabe has no doubts about Tsunoda's talent. "If all goes well and Tsunoda's abilities are recognised, I believe he could remain with Red Bull beyond 2026 and compete for championships," he continued.

"It would be ideal for Tsunoda to become more of a Red Bull driver. It's not as if he's parting ways with Honda forever. His current focus should be on securing a Red Bull seat, and if that's his goal, he should pursue it."
