It's not just the prospect of more glory driving Luis Enrique's desire to beat in Munich tonight, but personal heartbreak as well. The 55-year-old Paris Saint-Germain manager has been lauded for rejuvenating the French champions this season, with his side having knocked out , Aston Villa, and over two legs.
The 55-year-old has scaled the heights of Europe's elite competition before. His three-year stint in charge of , a club where he was revered as a player, included winning the competition in 2014/16 to go with two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey cups. He left the Catalan giants in 2017 to take over as Spain manager.
Just two years later, though, his stint with the national side was halted in harrowing circumstances. He stepped away from his role to spend more time with his daughter, Xana, after she was diagnosed with bone cancer.
Tragically, Xana died in August that year, aged nine. Last year, the once gifted midfield star opened up on the ordeal he and his wife, Elena Cullell, had been through.
"I consider myself lucky, very lucky," he told the documentary series You Have no F***ing idea. "My daughter came to live with us for nine wonderful years. We have thousands of memories from her, videos, incredible things."
However, Enrique's mother has struggled to hold onto such memories. He explained how the anguish of losing Xana meant she was unable to even look at pictures of her cherished granddaughter.
"My mother couldn't keep photos of Xana until I arrived home and asked her 'why aren't there any photos of Xana, mum?'" he explained. "She "said she couldn't. I said 'Mum, you have to. Xana is alive.' She isn't in the physical plane, but she is in the spiritual plane.
Enrique also revealed how the family spoke about Xana, a keen gymnast and piano player, every single day. Following her passing, he resumed his tenure with Spain before leaving for PSG in 2023.
Since then, he's formed a formidable side despite losing star power like Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappe. None of those departures, however, compares to what he's lost away from football.
Indeed, if Enrique does lead his side to glory in Germany tonight, there'll be no doubting the inspiration behind his success.
