Looking younger is what many strive for after they hit 40, but one thing that often lets them down isn't always their skincare, but actually their hairstyle.

As you age, hairstyles you once loved might not look as great over time, and could even add years onto your look.

However, as the hair follicles get smaller and the look and feel of hair changes, there are some changes you can make so your hair works best for you.

In fact, three hairstyles can have a drastic impact on how young you look.

1. Layered bob with a fringe

A layered bob with a fringe is a good style to go for if your hair is more on the wavy or curly side of things.

You can also go for this style if you don't love styling your hair every morning and want something more low-maintenance.

Jean Will, hair expert and co-founder of NiaWigs Inc, explained that adding layers and a fringe to the bob will help hide any thinning and create the illusion of thicker hair.

What's more, this trendy hairstyle is "perfect for women over 40," she revealed.

2. Pixie cut with a side part

Many people think a short pixie cut will age them, but when done right it has the opposite effect.

The bold look highlights cheekbones and other facial features which can result in an age-defying look.

The hair expert explained to She Finds that a pixie cut with a side part is the best way to interpret the style.

Adding a side part is a more modern interpretation of the style which also adds fullness to the hair.

In fact, it can "make over 40-year-old women look like they are in their 20s," she revealed.

3. Asymmetrical bob

Another way to add some thickness back into your locks is to ask your hairdresser for an asymmetrical bob.

Gina Rivera, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Phenix Salon Suites, told She Finds that the style can create a "youthful appeal".

Not only that, but if your hair is fine it can make your locks seem thicker while hanging onto some length.

The asymmetrical style can also help "remove some of the damaged ends" which make hair look brittle and lifeless.
