Kyren Wilson is the new snooker world champion after defeating qualifier Jak Jones 18-14 on a famous Crucible night. The damage had mostly been done in the first day's session having built up a strong 7-0 lead, but fought off a late attempt at a comeback to clinch his first title to emotional scenes in Sheffield.
Jones threatened to make an unlikely revival, having won three frames in a row with his opponent needing one more for glory, but an impressive 18th frame win for the 32-year-old sparked incredible moments of joy inside the iconic venue.
After potting match ball Wilson shouted "Come on!" to his family in the stands, before later apologising to his opponent for the emotion, but after a vintage 17 days of snooker action that has brought plenty of thrills we have a brand-new world champion.
"I'd like to say sorry to Jak for that outburst but it does just mean so much to all of us," Wilson told BBC host Hazel Irvine, apologising at the earliest opportunity, before being joined by his family.
Jones was attempting to become the first qualifier to win the World Championship since Shaun Murphy in 2005, but Wilson prevailed in a contest that he was always leading in, downing another rival after wins over Dominic Dale, Joe O'Connor, John Higgins and David Gilbert to reach the final.
