There is no dish more classically British than apple crumble, and it is incredibly easy to make if you want something to warm you up after a long day.

Jamie Oliver has shared his apple crumble which he described as a "hug in a bowl" as it can be made with just five simple ingredients.

On his website, Jamie said: "The humblest crumble ever, I'm mixing this one up with eating apples as well as the classic Bramley. So homely, so simple and so delicious - you're going to love it."

This is the perfect recipe to make now that the weather is getting colder as apples are in season in autumn so you can enjoy some homemade comfort food for less money.

It takes roughly five minutes to prepare this tasty dish before it bakes in the oven for 25 minutes.

image How to make autumn apple crumble You will need:
  • 1.5kg of Bramley apples
  • 150g of caster sugar
  • 100g of plain flour
  • 50g of unsalted butter
  • One lemon (zest)

image Method:

To begin, preheat the oven to 200C, then peel and core the apples. Cut the apples into quarters and then chop them into three-centimeter chunks.

Place the apples in a saucepan over a medium heat, then add the sugar and grate in the lemon zest.

Place a lid over the saucepan and cook for five minutes or until the apples have softened, then remove from the heat and allow to cool a little.

While the apples are cooling, add the butter and flour to a mixing bowl. Rub into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs.

Place the apples in a baking dish and sprinkle over the crumble topping.

Bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until it is golden and bubbling.

Take out the oven and your delicious apple crumble dessert is ready to eat.

Jamie said: "Enjoy with custard, a dollop of low-fat Greek-style yoghurt, a scoop of ice cream, or on tablespoon of low-fat crème fraîche with a grating of lemon zest."
