star has shared details about a recent injury that has prompted fans to wish him a speedy recovery.
In a worrying post on social media, May revealed that he had "bust his wrist" in a bike accident, which meant he couldn't participate in a charity bike ride on Tuesday.
In his post on X, he explained that he would still be attending the charity cycle trip but would be doing so from the comfort of a car due to his injury.
"I'm taking part in a charity bicycle ride today, with the Armonico Consort and me old mate Oz Clarke (OBE)," he said before adding: "But I'm going in the car, because I bust my wrist in a bicycle accident."
The 61-year-old received an outpouring of concern from fans, along with a few who pointed out the amusing contrast between his injury and his long history of driving on Top Gear and The Grand Tour.
"That's awesome you're still participating in the charity ride, even if it's from the car! Hope your wrist heals up quickly," one fan praised. A second person penned: "I can hear the 'Oh Bugger!'. Get well soon."
A third joked: "I thought [Richard] Hammond was meant to be the one getting injured but I wish you a quick recovery James."
It comes after May, who recently appeared on The Grand Tour, , suggesting it was time to stop the show because the three presenters were "on the brink of death."
He co-hosted the programme alongside his fellow former Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond until the show concluded last month.
He said: "Nothing will ever be as big as Top Gear and The Grand Tour were, so I'm not full of woe and regret."
He went on: "It was time to stop. We are all getting quite old. One or two of us are on the brink of death, and I hope we left on a high note with people wanting more, because that's what you're supposed to do in show business. So, I'm not depressed about it. It's a time for reflection, a reflection usually leads to another gin."
