Three chefs all said the same thing when asked how to make frozen oven chips turn crispy and golden at home. Restaurant chips are almost always deep fried, flashed in scorching oil to give them that perfect crispy yet fluffy bite.
However, chefs revealed that you don't need to try deep frying, which can be messy, unhealthy and even dangerous, to achieve the same taste and crispiness at home. Instead, a quick and delicious method will make oven chips go golden and crunchy, which George Duran, a celebrity chef in New York, explained was like "putting fries on the fast track to crispy heaven".
He told AllRecipes that "hands down" the air fryer is the best option for cooking frozen chips. He explained that not only does it cook them quickly, but it also makes them crunchy, and doesn't produce the mess that deep fryers would.
Kelly Jaggers, a cookbook author based in Texas, agreed. He explained the air fryer produces such good fries because they already have residual oil from when they were par-fried before being frozen.
The air fryer heats the oil to sizzling temperatures and eliminates the need for extra, so you get crunchy chips every time without unhealthy amounts of grease.

David Nayfeld, chef, restaurant owner and cookbook author, also said the same thing. He highlighted how important it is to preheat your appliance, because starting from cold could lead to uneven cooking or sogginess.
He revealed 200C is the "sweet spot for crispy, golden fries".
If you don't have an air fryer, another handy hack could help. The chefs advised against putting too many chips on the oven tray, because they could actually steam each other because they are so close together, so you don't get that fried crunch.
You can also use your air fryer to cook homemade crisps, and one method promises to make them crunchy and perfect every time.
